As the new school year kicks off, some students will have to be separated from their smartphones during class hours.

A total of 17 states and the District of Columbia are implementing new cellphone restrictions in schools this year.

Currently, 35 states have laws or rules limiting phone use.

Some states have implemented bans on phones throughout the school day, while others restrict them only during class time.

Students are adapting to new school rules, like using magnetic pouches or lockers to store their phones during school hours.

Some parents are concerned about the lack of cellphone availability at school. One parent said, “My child having her phone is very important to me, because if something were to happen, I know instantly.”
