Registration for Camp FUN, a day camp for area youths who have been affected by addiction or overdose, has begun.

Held twice a year since 2021, the next Camp FUN will be held from 10 am-4 pm on June 12 at On Target Outfitters, 3246 State Route 224, McComb, 45858. Youth registered in advance will be able to take part in various activities, including archery, fishing, cardio drumming, Karaoke, and more.

There is no cost to attend. Snacks and lunch will be provided, and there will be giveaways. Transportation is available if needed.

Gregg Fox, pastor at New Hope United Methodist Church in Rawson, said Camp FUN provides positive encouragement and support to youth ages 9-12 and 13-17. The event, he says, is about creating a safe space where each youth feels they belong and are loved, and to help them understand that their challenges do not define who they are, and that they are not alone in facing issues connected to addiction.

“We start off each camp by making sure each camper knows that they matter, they are important, and they are not the only ones facing challenges connected to addiction,” he said.

Camp activities are designed to offer ways for young people to build resiliency and positive coping strategies through exercise, music, art, animals, and literature. At On Target Outfitters, campers will take part in various activities, including archery, fishing, cardio drumming, Karaoke, and more.

“We try to do things that are fun,” Fox said. “For some of them, the activities are things that they have never done before,” he said. One camp included a yoga session.

While overdose deaths are on the decline in Hancock County, Fox said some are still occurring, and the effects of such deaths can have a lasting effect on youth. He said the camp can help youth move forward past a difficult time in their life.

He said camp volunteers are always willing to have conversations with campers.

The camp is a joint effort of churches and local organizations in collaboration with the Hancock County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board.

Fox, who is chairman of Camp FUN, said he feels blessed to be part of the event, which was started under the direction of Director Precia Stuby, who recently retired. He hopes the program will continue as long as it’s needed.

“I do pray for all those who attend,” he said. “It’s been very rewarding to me to see some of the kids come back the next year and to see how they are doing. I believe the program has an impact.”

“Camp might be just 6 or 8 hours, but it gives them a break from whatever they may be dealing with at home and gives them a chance to do something a little different.”
