The TV Volume Number Game

Steve’s Heartburn for the Day: The TV Volume Number Game

There are a lot of mysteries in life.

Why do socks disappear in the dryer? Why does the check-engine light come on the day after payday? And why does every television have exactly one perfect volume setting?

You know what I’m talking about.

You’re watching TV and decide to turn it up a notch. At volume 18, you can barely hear the dialogue. So you bump it up to 20 and suddenly it sounds like the living room is hosting a rock concert. The neighbors now know exactly what you’re watching.

But then there’s 19.

Volume 19 is perfect.

Not too loud. Not too quiet. Just right.

The problem starts when somebody else grabs the remote.

Maybe they crank it up to 25 during a commercial. Maybe they drop it down to 12 while you’re out of the room. Either way, the magic number is gone, and now you’re spending the next ten minutes trying to find it again.

It’s amazing when you think about it. Most TVs give you 100 volume choices, yet somehow only one of them actually works.

Scientists may never explain it.

Until then, I’ll be sitting on the couch, carefully protecting Volume 19 like it’s the last slice of pizza.

What’s your TV’s magic volume number?
