A growing number of stores are losing self-checkout lanes as analysts call them a “disaster” for consumers and retailers.

Theft is the biggest reason why stores are ditching self-checkout, as consumers are 21 times more likely to try to sneak items past scanners.  Lending Tree even found that one in five Americans say they’ve accidentally “stolen” an item while in self-checkout.

There are also increasing labor costs as employees get pulled from their assigned duties to deal with self-checkout lane issues.

Stores like Target and Dollar General are cutting back on the machines.  DG’s boss said “We should be using self-checkout as a secondary checkout vehicle, not a primary.”
