Why does the moon need its own time zone?
White House Instructs NASA to Create Standard Time for The Moon
The White House has directed NASA to establish a standard time for the moon and other celestial bodies, setting international norms for countries joining the ever- growing race for space.
The plan to set a Coordinated Lunar Time, or LTC, must be ready by the end of 2026.
The time would allow spacecraft to set benchmarks for their missions.
“The same clock that we have on Earth would move at a different rate on the moon,” Kevin Coggins, NASA’s space communications and navigation chief, said. An Earth-based clock would appear to lose on average 58.7 microseconds per Earth-day.
