This Week in Science: World-Altering Bag of Cheetos!
It’s time for another edition of This Week In Science . . . A post by New Mexico’s Carlsbad Caverns went viral, after a bag of Cheetos threatened to completely transform a cave’s ecosystem. (???) A tourist apparently dropped the bag and didn’t tell anyone. A park official said the processed corn “formed the perfect environment to host microbial life and fungi.” Then crickets, mites, and spiders swarmed, spread the Cheeto dust throughout the cave, and mold started to grow. Park rangers spent 20 minutes removing the mold before it got worse. They said it shows how a spilled snack bag can be “world changing” to the life of a cave.
