When’s the last time you checked your tires? With snow season just around the corner, it’s time to prepare for wet or icy roads this winter.

Use the tried and true penny test to ensure that your tires have enough tread to drive safely when conditions are wet.

Simply insert the penny upside down into your tire so that Abe Lincoln’s head goes into the tread. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head while the penny is in place, you need new tires. If part of his head is covered, your tires appear to be in good shape, as tires should have 1/8″ of tread for safe driving.

In order to balance out wear and tear on your tires, you should rotate them every 5,000-to-8,000 miles.

Also, you should check tire pressure weekly during the winter months and be careful not to overinflate your tires. Because of the cold weather, tire pressure can drop, leading to your tires being underinflated, which can cause possible blowouts and rapid tread wear.
