How effective is your cold and allergy medicine?
FDA Proposes Ending Use of Decongestant in Cold, Allergy Meds
- The FDA has proposed pulling removing a widely used nasal decongestant ingredient from OTC medications.
- Phenylephrine, used in popular meds like DayQuil, Theraflu and Sudafed, has shown to be completely ineffective in treating congestion when taken orally.
- The FDA will make its final decision to pull ban the ingredient, also used in Benadryl, Alka-Seltzer Plus and Tylenol, by May 7th. Until then, drugmakers can still market oral phenylephrine as an oral decongestant.
- Phenylephrine became a popular cold and allergy medicine ingredient in the early 2000s after a law banned over the counter sales of pseudoephedrine, which is used to make meth.
