Surgeon General Calls for Social Media Warning Labels

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy says social media comes with such risks that platforms should come with warning labels, just like those found on cigarettes and alcohol.

He told ‘The New York Times’, ‘ “The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor…A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.”

Murthy cited several studies, including a 2019 American Medical Association study that showed that teens who spend three hours a day on social media double their risk of depression.

Teens spend an average of five hours per day on social media, according to a Gallup poll.
