EPA Bans Import and Usage Of Last Form of Asbestos
Chrysotile asbestos is used in motor parts like brakes and gaskets.
Monday’s ruling is the end of 30 years of what the EPA said has been “inadequate protections” against the carcinogen linked to 40,000 U.S. deaths each year.
The import of chrysotile asbestos has been banned immediately, but the process of entirely phasing it out could take from six months to twelve years.
The EPA initially banned asbestos in 1989, but a court ruling reversed the decision. Since then, the material’s usage has been gradually falling.
