This feature will soon be required on all new vehicles.
U.S. To Require Automatic Emergency Braking on New Vehicles
The NHTSA has announced that automatic emergency breaking will be a required in all new vehicles, estimating that the required safety feature will reduce the 40,000 traffic deaths that happen annually.
90% of new vehicles already have auto emergency breaking due to a voluntary agreement with automakers.
The current software requires vehicles to stop and avoid hitting a vehicle in front of them at speeds up to 62 miles per hour and to stop automatically at 90 miles per hour is a collision is imminent.
Not only will cars have updated software for this required feature but even hardware like radar could be installed on new cars, driving up their price by around $84 per vehicle.
