This is a first for school buses.
Company Making Three-Point Seatbelts Standard on School Buses
Starting this fall, bus manufacturer Blue Bird will offer three-point seatbelts for every passenger.
The company is also installing air bags for drivers.
More than 25 million kids take the bus to school each day and the National Highway Transportation Safety Board has long said seatbelts are a much safer option for bus riders.
Studies show that 1,110 people were killed in school bus crashes over a ten-year period. Since then, eight states have laws requiring all new buses to come equipped with seatbelts, saying the extra installation cost of $8,500 is no excuse to not protect schoolchildren.
