Fast facts:
  • This holiday also marks the anniversary of the end of World War I.
  • There are 18.8 million veterans living in the United States as of 2015, according to the Census Bureau. Of these, 1.6 million veterans are women.
  • A large proportion of the veteran population, 9.3 million, are aged 65 and older while 1.6 million are younger than 35.
  • The American labor force has 7.2 million veterans ages 18 to 65. Of these, 6.8 million are employed. Male and female veterans’ annual median incomes are both higher than their non-veteran counterparts.
  • Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. This holiday celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who gave their lives and those who perished while in service.
  • The celebration’s main purpose is to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
Honoring those who served:
  • Strike a conversation with a vet and learn about their story.
  • Where did they serve? Do they come from a military family? Did someone inspire you to join the military?
  • Fly an American flag.
  • Support veteran-owned businesses. Or if you own a business, offer something free or discounted to veterans.
  • Today is also a great day to make a donation and help our homeless veterans across our country which is a growing problem.  There are so many doing great things for our veterans like veteransmatter.org.
  • Do you know of a non-profit that supports our veterans?
  • Wear a red poppy… “On Memorial Day and Veterans Day, millions of red crepe paper poppies—all handmade by veterans as part of their therapeutic rehabilitation—are distributed across the country in exchange for donations that go directly to assist disabled and hospitalized veterans.” (via American Legion Auxiliary)
