Many Young Adults Avoiding The Holidays To Avoid Post-Election Fights
A new American Psychological Association survey reveals the lengths that some people will go to in order to avoid talking politics this holiday season:
- 7 out of 10 adults want to avoid political talk altogether
- 2 out of 5 will avoid specific family members to avoid post-election talk
- 23% of senior citizens will avoid certain family members. That number jumps to 46% for those between 18 and 44.
The APA offers some tips to navigate potentially explosive conversations this holiday season:
- Listen to understand, not to argue
- Find common ground
- Accept that minds might not change
- Focus on shared memories
- Know when to change the subject
