Where does lightning strike most in the US?
Lightning Strikes in US Reveal Most Frequent Areas
‘GFR”s science team says lightning strikes are most common along the Gulf Coast, especially in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Florida area.
In 2023, Miami-Fort Lauderdale had 120,000 lightning strikes, more than any other spot in the US.
The reason for all those strikes? The Gulf Coast has more thunderstorms, compared to the drier climate of the West Coast.
Lightning strikes US soil at least 55 million times each year. On average 28 people die from lightning strikes annually.
