The Army is cutting its force by 24,000, or nearly 5%, in a major restructuring to prepare for any future wars.
As it struggles to recruit new soldiers, jobs that are already empty like counterinsurgency will be slashed. These jobs had increased during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
“We’re moving away from counterterrorism and counterinsurgency; we want to be postured for large-scale combat operations,” Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said.
Officials stress that these cuts are being made to “spaces”
and not to “soldiers”.
