🥵 How do you keep cool?
The heat is on! Here are a few great places around Northwest Ohio to cool off while temperatures soar this week.
When the thermometer starts flirting with 100 degrees, simply stepping outside can feel like opening an oven door. If you’re looking for a break from the heat, here are a few great places around Northwest Ohio to cool off over the next few days.
📚 1. Spend an Hour at Your Local Library
Libraries are one of the best-kept secrets during a heat wave. They’re air-conditioned, quiet, and many offer summer programs, reading areas, free Wi-Fi, and activities for kids.
The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library is open throughout the week and has SummerREAD activities and events for all ages.
🍦 2. Treat Yourself to Ice Cream
Sometimes the simplest solution is the best one.
Whether it’s Dietsch Brothers in Findlay, Kewpee in Lima for a frosty treat, or your favorite neighborhood ice cream stand, it’s a delicious excuse to escape the heat for a little while.
🏊 3. Head to the Pool or Splash Pad
Nothing beats jumping into the water.
Many communities across Northwest Ohio offer public pools and splash pads during the summer. Check your local parks department for hours before heading out.
🌳 4. Find Some Shade at a Local Park
Not every outdoor activity has to happen in full sun.
Parks with mature trees offer cooler walking paths, picnic areas, and a chance to enjoy nature without baking on the pavement.
🎬 5. Catch an Afternoon Movie
Theaters are cool, comfortable, and a perfect excuse to enjoy two hours of air conditioning while escaping the afternoon heat.
🏛️ 6. Visit a Local Museum
Places like the Hancock Historical Museum, Mazza Museum, or Children’s Museum of Findlay offer an indoor break while giving you something interesting to explore.
❄️ 7. Don’t Forget Community Cooling Locations
During periods of extreme heat, Findlay and Hancock County have announced cooling locations for residents, including the City Mission, St. Andrew’s Laundry Annex, and additional indoor spaces through Hancock Public Health. City parks also provide shaded areas during the day.
Steve’s Take
Summer is meant to be enjoyed—but not at the expense of your health. If you’re feeling the heat this week, slow down, drink plenty of water, and don’t be afraid to spend a little extra time somewhere cool until temperatures come back down.
Stay safe, Northwest Ohio.
