What Is The “996” Work Trend and Will It Affect Employee Health?

Social media is buzzing about the “996” work trend.

“996” stands for working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week.

The trend is gaining popularity with some tech firms embracing it as a badge of ambition and dedication.

Some AI startups like Cognition and Rilla are normalizing extreme work hours, with Rilla explicitly warning job candidates of 70-hour weeks and demanding dedication from its employees.

Experts warn that the rise of the 996 work schedule could lead to the exclusion of employees unwilling or unable to commit to such demanding hours.

While the “996” model may lead to short-term productivity gains, experts caution about the long-term costs, including health risks associated with working long hours and potential negative impacts on productivity.
