FBI Warns Against Billion-Dollar Scam

The FBI says the Phantom Hacker Scam has already devastated retirees across the US, with crooks costing Americans $1 billion since 2024.

The scam comes in three phases: the tech support impostor, financial institution impostor and US government impostor.

The tech support imposter contacts the victim, directing them to download a program that lets the crook into the computer.  After asking the victim to open their financial accounts, the crook tells the victim that they’ll get a call from their bank.  The financial institution imposter then calls the victim and tells them their accounts have been hacked, convincing them to move them into a third party account via wire transfer for safety.

That’s when the US government imposter calls the victim, directing them to move their money to an “alias” account for added security.  By the time this happens, the victims have lost their money and the scammers are long gone.

The FBI is asking you to speak to your older relatives about the Phantom Hacker Scam to keep them protected.
