Scams to Watch Out for This Tax Season
The IRS reported a $5.5 billion loss due to tax fraud schemes in 2023. To make sure you don’t get scammed while preparing your return, look for some of this tax season’s biggest scams, like:
Tax-avoidance scams. These thieves claim that if you pay them big bucks up front, you won’t have to pay a single cent in taxes. High-income filers are usually targets of this scam.
Violation scams. A crook pretends to be with the IRS and threatens punitive action unless you pay them immediately.
Filing scams. Thieves promise to file your taxes on your behalf, collecting your data without intent to file.
Remember, the IRS never asks for your credit or debit card information over the phone and can’t threaten to call law enforcement if you don’t immediately do what they ask by phone. Please don’t engage with random contacts claiming to be from the IRS or any tax prep company.
