  Some Bath Safety Stats

The most recent study conducted by the CDC produced some sobering statistics regarding injuries in the bathroom:

Approximately 370 individuals are injured in a bathroom every day in the U.S. making it the second most dangerous room in the house, bested only by the kitchen.66% of injuries that take place in bathrooms occur when people are either in the tub or the shower.

The most common of these injuries stem from ‘slips and falls” while either showering or bathing; they account for more than one-third, about 78,000, of all bathroom injuries in the United States.Every year approximately 235,000 adults and teenagers over the age of 15 are admitted to emergency rooms in the U.S. due to these “slips and falls”.

Roughly 32,900, are subsequently hospitalized after first being admitted to the E.R.79% of bathroom-related injuries occur to individuals 65 and over.

The CDC study also revealed that, while 63% of U.S. homeowners have bathtub mats or non-skid strips to help reduce bathtub falls, only 19% of homes had grab bars.”

The study showed that injuries rise proportionately with one’s age, peaking at 85 years with the odds of an injury increasing greatly with each passing year.

Sometimes these injuries can mean a lifetime of treatment like physical therapy, and in some cases, they can cause paralysis or even death. It is estimated that about 1 person in the U.S. dies every day from a bathroom-related injury occurring in either the bathtub or the shower.
