Filing your taxes late this year? Here’s what you need to know.
What To Know about Filing Taxes Late in 2025

With 43 million people waiting until the last three weeks to file their taxes before the April 15th, many Americans will file their returns late.
If you do file late, be aware that the IRS will tack on both failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties based on what you owe the government. The failure to pay penalty is 0.5 percent of unpaid tax per month up to a maximum of 25 percent.
If you can, file an extension with Form 4868 . This will give you until October 15th to file. This isn’t an extension to pay, but gives you a little wiggle room to get your tax info together.
You can file for free using the IRS’ Free File if you have a simple return.
Remember that if your file is 60 days late, the IRS imposes a minimum penalty of 50 or 100 percent of the tax owed.
