How many Americans report dog bites each year?
Study Reveals Most Dangerous Dog Breeds
With 4.5 million people reporting dog bites yearly, Florida’s Fighter Law Firm researched over three years of bite data for their list of dog breeds most likely to send you to the hospital or court.
They are:

- Pit Bulls – which accounted for nearly 27% of all reported dog bites and 61 fatalities from attacks over the studied three years. Only 17% of the pit bulls studied were vaccinated, sending the breed’s danger scale number to 90 out of 100.
- Shepherds – Scoring a danger scale number of 57 out of 100, shepherds accounted for 10% of all reported bites and two fatalities. German Shepherds were not included in this shepherd category. Nearly 16% of the bites were considered “severe”.
- Boxers- considered the study’s third most dangerous breed—accounted for less than 2% of bites but ranked high because of bite severity and low vaccination rates.
Fighter Law Firm CEO Thomas Feiter stated, “The data on Pit Bulls is striking, but context matters. Unfortunately, many of these dogs are trained for aggression or kept in unsuitable conditions that contribute to these statistics,” adding, “Any dog, regardless of breed reputation, can cause harm if not properly trained, socialized, or if placed in threatening situations.”
