How To Prepare For Tornado Season

Experts Give Advice On How To Prepare For Tornado Season

This year could be the most devastating tornado season ever.

Tornado season is getting dangerously unpredictable. Climate shifts are moving the traditional “Tornado Alley” farther east, and experts expect severe storms to ramp up rapidly by early summer.

Accuweather is predicting between 1,050 and 1,250 in the U.S. this year, with activity expected to start in May.

Emergency managers stress you cannot rely on outdoor sirens alone. High winds can easily drown out the alarms. You must use phone alerts, weather radios, and local TV broadcasts to stay informed.

When a warning hits, move to a sturdy building immediately. Head straight to a basement, a designated safe room, or a windowless interior hallway.

Do not assume your bathtub is safe. The American Red Cross warns that many bathrooms sit on exterior walls. Instead, choose a small interior closet and wrap yourself in heavy blankets to shield yourself from flying debris.

If you are stuck outside or in your car, do not stay there. Twisters can easily toss vehicles into the air. Find a low ditch or ravine and cover your head with your arms.

You also need to prepare financially before disaster strikes. Officials urge everyone to update their homeowners’ insurance policies now to accurately reflect their property’s current value.
