Is eating expired eggs risky?

How Long After The “Best By” Date Can You Eat Eggs?-Digital art gif. Two brown eggs with blue eyes, the first looking at the other with concern, the second eyes wide in shock, looking at a fried egg on a plate.

With egg prices being so high, consumers might be hesitant to throw out a dozen with an expired date.

HuffPost asked experts how long eggs can be eaten after the “Best By” date printed on the carton.

Dr. Michael Chichak, medical director at MEDvidi, said, “Eggs can last between three to five weeks post-purchase as long as they are refrigerated and stored in an environment with a temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.”

Dr. Laura Purdy, a board-certified family medicine physician, said “best by” dates are confusing because it’s up to the seller and there is no government regulation regarding the category.

She added, “This means when the food item is going to be the freshest and taste the best. It has nothing to do with the food being safe to consume.”

One registered dietician said, “As long as the eggs are stored in the fridge, eggs shouldn’t spoil. I’ve eaten eggs two months past their sell-by date. They just don’t have the quality that they once had.”
