Looking for a Job? You’re Not Imagining It—The Search Has Gotten Tougher

A new report suggests today’s job market is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate, with many applicants holding onto every interview and job offer they receive.

If you’ve been looking for a job lately, you’re probably not surprised by this news.

Sending out dozens of applications.

Waiting days—or even weeks—for a response.

Landing an interview that never turns into a phone call.

For many job seekers, that’s becoming the new normal.

A new midyear report from Glassdoor suggests today’s job market is becoming increasingly competitive, and applicants are feeling the pressure.

One of the biggest signs?

People are becoming much less likely to turn down a job offer.

Earlier this year, the percentage of applicants rejecting offers dropped noticeably, suggesting many workers are accepting opportunities they may have passed on in a stronger job market.

As Glassdoor put it, every callback, every interview, and every offer has become more valuable than ever.

The numbers tell a similar story.

U.S. employers added 57,000 jobs in June, a noticeable slowdown from 129,000 jobs added in May, indicating that hiring has cooled in many industries.

Several factors are contributing to the slower pace, including higher interest rates, changing economic conditions, the growing use of artificial intelligence, and continued uncertainty for many businesses.

That doesn’t mean jobs aren’t available.

It does mean employers often have more applicants to choose from, making the hiring process longer and more competitive than many people remember.

Career experts say persistence remains one of the biggest advantages for job seekers. Updating your résumé, tailoring applications to each position, following up after interviews, and continuing to build new skills can all improve your chances in a crowded market.
