Remember this sound?

The Sound Every Gen Xer Recognizes Instantly

Before smartphones.

Before Wi-Fi.

Before streaming.

Before your refrigerator could somehow connect to the internet.

There was a sound.

A sound that instantly told everyone in the house exactly what was happening.

BEEEEEEP… BOOOOOP… SKREEEEECH… CHHHHHH…

The dial-up modem.

If you’re a Gen Xer, you can probably hear it in your head right now.

That sound meant somebody was logging onto the internet. It also meant nobody could use the phone for a while.

Back then, getting online wasn’t something that happened automatically. It was an event.

You’d sit down at the computer, double-click your internet connection, and wait.

And wait.

And wait some more.

Then the modem would start singing its robotic song. If everything went right, you were online. If not, you got to listen to the entire performance again.

Pictures loaded one line at a time.

Downloading a song could take hours.

And if somebody in the house picked up the phone, your internet adventure was over.

Looking back, it’s amazing how patient we were.

Today, if a webpage takes more than three seconds to load, people start questioning their entire internet service provider.

Back then, we considered it a victory if a photo finished loading before dinner.

Maybe that’s why so many of us look back on those days with a smile.

The technology was slower.

The connections were slower.

But somehow life felt a little slower too.

And every now and then, all it takes is one strange electronic sound to bring it all rushing back.

🎸 Some memories don’t need a photograph.

Sometimes they just need a modem.
