Researchers believe dogs tilt their heads when they’re focusing closely on sounds they recognize — especially words connected to people they trust.

In one study, dogs who knew the names of toys or commands were more likely to tilt their heads when they heard them spoken.

It may also help them adjust their ears to better locate where a sound is coming from.

But there’s another possibility dog owners already suspect.

Sometimes it just means they’re paying attention to you.
