The Friday Afternoon “Quick Question” Is Never Quick

There are few phrases more dangerous on a Friday afternoon than this one:

“Hey, quick question before you leave…”

Nope.

That is not a quick question. That is a trap wearing business-casual shoes.

Because by Friday afternoon, especially after 4:30, your brain is not in problem-solving mode anymore. Your brain is already halfway home. It’s thinking about dinner, comfortable pants, the couch, and how fast it can forget every password it used during the workweek.

But then someone pops up with a “quick question.”

And somehow that quick question has attachments.

And follow-ups.

And someone gets copied in.

And now your weekend is standing outside the building with its arms crossed like, “Are you coming or what?”

The worst part is they always say it casually.

“Whenever you get a chance.”

Buddy, the chance was Tuesday. Friday afternoon is not the time to start a new investigation, troubleshoot a spreadsheet, launch a group email, or ask anyone to “circle back.” By that point, nobody is circling back. We are circling the parking lot looking for the fastest way out. By Friday afternoon, I’m not ignoring responsibility. I’m just giving the weekend a fair chance to survive.

Steve’s final thought:
If someone says “quick question” after 4:30 on a Friday, pretend your email went into witness protection.
