7 New Blood Pressure Guidelines

The American Heart Association hopes that their new blood pressure guidelines will save many of the 700,000 Americans who die from hypertension.

When it comes to managing blood pressure:
  1. Limit sodium intake
  2. Limit alcohol intake
  3. Reduce stress
  4. Maintain a healty weight
  5. Follow the DASH Diet.  The AHA explains, “It emphasizes reduced sodium intake and a diet high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and low-fat or nonfat dairy, and includes lean meats and poultry, fish and non-tropical oils.”
  6. Increase physical activity to at least 75 to 150 minutes per week
  7. Monitor your blood pressure at home
The AHA added that “prevention, early detection and management of high blood pressure are critical to long-term heart and brain health, which means longer, healthier lives.”
