The FBI Issues Warning About “Smishing” Texts

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning to cell phone users about “smashing” texts.

“Smishing” is a phishing message sent via SMS.

The latest wave of texts included notices about toll road services, delivery companies and government agencies.

The texts prompt people to pay fake fees in order to capture the user’s personal and financial information.

In March, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received over 2000 complaints about fake toll road payments.

In the warning, the FBI said, “Do not click on any links or respond. Even replying to the message can confirm to scammers that your number is active, increasing the risk of further attacks.”
