Medical Debt Will Stay On Credit Reports After Judge’s Ruling

A federal judge has nixed a Biden-era Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule that removed unpaid medical bills from credit reports, which gave Americans a boost in credit.

Judge Sean Jordan of the U.S. District Court of Texas’ Eastern District agreed with two industry associations which argued that the removal of medical debt would “weaken the accuracy and completeness of consumer credit reports.”

Dan Smith, CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association said, “Information about unpaid medical debts is an important element in assessing a consumer’s ability to pay. This is the right outcome for protecting the integrity of the system.”

Judge Jordan also said the CFPB couldn’t write laws; only Congress could.

Americans are collectively $49 billion in medical debt.
