Did Gen Xers Have the Greatest Music Experience?
If you’re not a Gen Xer (born between 1965 – 1980), you’re probably sick of those “Gen X Had the Best (whatever)” lists. Well unfortunately for you . . . here’s another one! Loudwire dot com did a list of the “Seven Reasons Why Gen X Had the Greatest Music Experience” (click HERE to check out the post). They brought up a lot of good points. Here are a few I thought were “spot on” . . .
- The personalities were huge:
David Lee Roth, Billy Idol, and the guys from Twisted Sister and Motley Crue, ALL leapt off album covers and into our living rooms. Of course in the mid and later 80’s thanks to MTV.
- The continuation of guitar culture:
Wizards like Clapton, Beck, Page, Iommi, Van Halen, and Blackmore were still doing their thing. But new studs like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Vai, Slash, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, (and yes, the vastly underrated Prince) blazed new trails.
- Concert culture:
Maybe nothing about music has changed more. Remember standing in line for tickets? How about paying a reasonable amount for them, without expensive fees tacked on? And wearing the concert shirt to school or work the day after the concert. Stage production also took a huge leap in the ’80s from Def Leppard playing in the round, to Tommy Lee’s drum rollercoaster, to Dio fighting giant dragons and cobras.
