Slang Words From 1954
Yesterday, we talked about the long-lasting power of the word “cool”, and how it’s been used for over 100 years. Check out these teen slang words from 1954. And unfortunately it doesn’t look like these had the “staying power” of cool. The list is from a newspaper story from the “Northwest News” in Bethany, Oklahoma . . .
- “Cool Jonah” was slang for a well-dressed kid.
- “George” meant money.
- “Spooning your scarf” meant eating your food.
- “Dubble Bubble” meant a cute girl.
- “Bad Dad from Baghdad” was a guy who thinks he’s tough.
- A “flookie” is a jerk.
- If you’re at the movies, it’s called a “hecklethon”.
- And a “flip lip” is a person who makes wisecracks.
And the only slang on this list that some people still use today (although I have used “flookie” before), is the word “square”, which is a person you don’t like. So always keep this in mind, you might think you’re a Cool Jonah, but you’re really a Bad Dad from Baghdad. Now go spoon your scarf with a Dubble Bubble.
