At 9:30 Tuesday morning, the sheriff’s office announced the county was going down to a Level 2 Road Alert.

A Level 2 Road Alert means roadways are extremely hazardous with blowing and drifting snow and/or flooding. Only those who feel it is necessary to travel should be on the roadways.

January 26, 2026, 11 a.m.

This morning, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office convened a coordinated weather and roadway collaboration meeting with key community stakeholders and response partners to share real-time information and align our decision-making.

Representatives discussed current road conditions, active problem areas, and the latest forecasted weather impacts-including wind, drifting, and hard-pack conditions-to evaluate whether roadway advisories should be sustained or adjusted and how changing conditions may affect safe travel across the county.

The following is a summary of outcomes from this meeting.

Hancock County remains under a Level 3 Snow Emergency and Will Remain at a Level 3 through Tuesday January 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. due to hard-packed roads and ongoing drifting snow. While road crews continue making progress, conditions are still hazardous and can change quickly.

What we’re seeing

. Road conditions: Hard-pack and drifting snow/ice remains on many roads

. Salt effectiveness is limited under current weather/temperature conditions

. Wind-driven drifting is continuing and may worsen overnight

. Interstate and State Highway conditions: Continue to be plowed/cleared with the interstate expected to continue to improve as the day progresses.

Forecast (next 24 hours)

Additional snowfall in our area is expected to be less than 1 inch, but winds

up to 25 mph beginning around 2:00 AM on Tuesday Morning will

likely cause continued drifting, especially in open areas and rural roads.

What Level 3 means

Most roadways are closed and extremely hazardous/flooded. Employees should

comply with workplace policies or contact their employer.

Business & shift coordination
