Restaurants are seeing the biggest shift.

About 35% of customers say they’re scaling back restaurant tips, and fewer diners are leaving the once-standard 20 percent.

Another growing frustration?  Those checkout screens that spin around asking for tips before you even get your receipt.

Around 36% of customers now choose their own tip instead of the suggested amount, signaling people are pushing back against preset expectations.

Even coffee counters aren’t safe

Tipping is also declining at:

• coffee shops
• food trucks
• fast food restaurants
• delivery services

In short, Americans aren’t necessarily done tipping — they’re just being more selective about when it makes sense.

And one state tips less than everyone else

According to the Toast survey, California ranks as the lowest-tipping state in the country, with restaurant tips averaging 17.2%, compared to the national average of 19.2%.
