Booooooring!
Scientist Says AI Could Make Us Dull
A new academic study suggests artificial intelligence may be making people a little more predictable — and not in the fun “I always order fries” kind of way.
Researcher Sandra Matz says popular AI models tend to smooth out complex ideas and turn them into safe, average answers. Her team looked at more than 110,000 real-world decisions from 1,000 people and compared them with AI recommendations.
The result? AI often pushed people toward safer, more conventional choices while steering them away from quirky, creative, or unexpected behavior.
Matz put it bluntly: “AI hates risk because we train it that way.” In other words, instead of helping us discover something new, AI may just keep feeding us more of what we already like.
Now she’s calling for tech companies to build an “exploration mode” that gives users stranger, more surprising, and more original suggestions.
Because let’s be honest — nobody wants the future to feel like one giant beige waiting room with Wi-Fi.
