This Week in Science: Belly Flops, Space Babies, and Uranus’s Gas

It’s time for “Nerd News” . . . covering the most important news for your brain. Here’s a quick rundown of this week in science . . .

  • Researchers at Brown are looking into what makes belly flops so painful. They say it could be useful for marine engineers and the U.S. Navy.
  • In space news: A study next year will look at whether we can reproduce in space, But before you go enlist in NASA, you should probably know they’re not going about it the old fashion way . . . nope, they’ll be testing in vitro in low Earth orbit.
  • In funnier space news: The European Space Agency did a simulation to see what a probe would look like falling into Uranus. They say the tip of the probe would burn purple because of all the gas.
  • In A.I. news: a study found it can now generate faces that look more realistic than actual faces, and a study found we might start running out of things to teach A.I. in 2026.
