Police Offering Crime Prevention Tips After Vehicles Stolen
(From Tiffin Police Chief David Pauly)
The Tiffin Police Department has recently received a couple of reports from the northwest side of town involving individuals checking parked vehicles to see if they are unlocked. In these incidents, suspects entered unsecured vehicles, located keys that had been left inside, and stole the vehicles for what appear to be joyrides.
While these recent reports came from one area of the city, this serves as an important reminder for everyone to take a few simple precautions to help prevent becoming a victim.
Please help protect yourself by following these crime prevention tips:
* Always lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway.
* Never leave your keys or key fob inside your vehicle.
* Many vehicles can be started simply by having the key fob inside.
* Remove valuables such as wallets, purses, firearms, electronics, and cash, or keep them completely out of sight.
* Close all windows and sunroofs before leaving your vehicle.
* Keep exterior lights on around your home during the evening hours and consider installing motion-activated lighting or security cameras.
* Report suspicious activity immediately. If you observe anyone checking vehicle door handles or acting suspiciously in your neighborhood, contact the Tiffin Police Department as soon as possible. A quick call may allow officers to respond before a crime occurs.
Criminals are often looking for the easiest opportunity. Taking a few seconds to lock your vehicle and remove your keys can make all the difference. Our officers will continue conducting proactive patrols throughout the city.
We appreciate the support and partnership of our community in helping keep Tiffin a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.
