Road Salt Can Get Into Drinking Water Supply As Snow Melts
(ONN) – Heavy snowfall in Ohio this year has led to increased use of road salt, and as the snow melts, that salt can get into the state’s drinking water supply.
More of that leftover snow will be melting, but some new research shows that melt can send road salt into the water supply.
Scientists say salt levels in the waterways have doubled about every 20 years.
Rock salt used on roads and sidewalks is sodium chloride, which is similar to table salt, and doctors say that salt causes the body to retain water, which can increase blood volume and be dangerous for some people.
